These Families are Streaking for Pediatric Stroke

Streak for Pediatric Stroke Awareness Month

May is Pediatric Stroke Awareness Month. Do you know that CHASA proclaimed the first Pediatric Stroke Awareness Day way back in 2002?  A couple of moms were tired of hearing, "I didn't know a baby could have a stoke." Sound familiar? In May, families around the world are letting others know that Kids Have Strokes, Too. Some are asking local government to proclaim May as Pediatric Stroke Awareness Month. Others are hosting events to raise funds and awareness and our online community is setting up online Streak for Pediatric Stroke pages.  Meet a few of these families below... The Mory Family is Streaking for Pediatric Stroke Awareness - When Mikey was a few months old we noticed he was only reaching for his toys with his left hand. His pediatrician joked that we should teach him to box or pitch since he'd be a lefty. Eventually we decided this was not normal and we had him tested with an MRI. Our sweet little baby survived a stroke in-utero which damaged the left side of his … [Read more...]

5K, Marathons, Bikes, Walks and Runs for CHASA

We're often contacted by volunteers who would like to host a large walk or run. Because these events can be complicated and sometimes expensive to set up, we encourage volunteers to participate in an established walk or run. The established events usually have a greater number of participants, meaning that you'll have more people to share your awareness story with. It's also easy to raise funds for CHASA in addition to raising awareness. You can set up a fundraising page to benefit CHASA. If you are absolutely certain you want to host your own event, information relating to this is provided below under "Setting Up Your Own Walk or Run to Benefit CHASA". Raising Pediatric Stroke or Hemiplegic Cerebral Palsy Awareness - Helpful Hints for Participating in an Established Walk or Run Check with your physician to make sure you're in great shape and can participate in an athletic event like a walk or run. David isn't stopping with just writing - he's running in the Philadelphia Marathon this weekend in an effort to raise funds for the Children's Hemiplegia and Stroke Association (CHASA). Pediatric Stroke Awareness Tree

Chicago Pediatric Stroke Awareness Tree

We know it's early, but you'll need time to make your ornaments. In 2011, Tiffaney Carlisle, the mom of a pediatric stroke survivor from Illinois, approached the Children's Hemipelgia and Stroke Association (CHASA) about sponsoring a pediatric stroke awareness tree at the Brookfield Zoo. The CHASA board thought it was a great idea, so we ordered a tree.  The tree was seen by thousands of people and was a great way to spread the word that Kids Have Strokes, Too. CHASA will sponsor this project again in 2012. Click on the photo for a better view of the tree. Your Pediatric Stroke or Hemiplegia Awareness Tree You can set up a similar project in your community. It's pretty easy and a fun way to raise awareness and funds to help our little stroke or hemiplegic cerebral palsy survivors. Think of a highly visible location for your tree - shopping center, doctor or dentist office, veterinary office, your employer's building, schools, places of worship, restaurants, local mom and pop … [Read more...]

NYC Marathoner Runs for Infant Stroke Survivors

Susan-Dodge-NYC-Marathon- Running for Pediatric Stroke Survivors

This story is about community. Two moms. One little boy who survived a stroke. And helping pediatric stroke survivors worldwide. Susan Dodge will run in the 2013 NYC Marathon on Sunday, November 4th, and parents of pediatric stroke survivors from around the world will cheer her on - some in person and many in their hearts. Susie's Story In May of 2011 I gave birth to my second child , Samantha. After gaining 50 pounds I knew that I need to do something to lose it. I had a 20 month old, a newborn and not a lot of free time, so I got creative. I got a stroller and started running. After a few months of running I decided to do some organized runs to qualify for the New York city Marathon. By December, I was qualified and excepted to run the marathon. Now the real work began. Running became my daily mediation and my healing to much of life; however, I still had this feeling that I was running the marathon without purpose. I had lost the weight and felt great, but I knew something was … [Read more...]

Pediatric Stroke Awareness Heroes – Senator Blumenthal and Patch’s Family

When Patch was 9 months old, his parents discovered that he'd had a stroke before he was born. Patch was just a baby and he needed therapy to help him learn many of the essential developmental milestones like eating, rolling over, sitting up, walking, talking, and using his left hand and fingers. Patch's parents took him to physical, occupational, and speech therapy until one day, their private insurance company decided that it was no longer going to pay for therapy. Patch's family spent hours on the phone and sent multiple letters attempting to have their insurance company reinstate the the therapy coverage. Their efforts were not successful, so Patch's parents contacted the office of U. S. Senator Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut for assistance in convincing the insurance company that these therapies were a very important part of Patch's recovery from his perinatal stroke. With Senator Blumentahl's assistance and letters from Patch's doctors and therapists, the insurance company … [Read more...]

Streak for Pediatric Stroke iPad Contest

Streak for Pediatric Stroke

Enter CHASA's Streak for Pediatric Stroke iPad Contest! CHASA will give away a new iPad to one lucky person. Set up a fundraising  page at Firstgiving and start asking friends, family, and your community to donate. For each $25 donation on your page, you'll receive one entry in the contest. Bring in more donations and you'll have more entries and a better chance to win the iPad.  On June 15th, we'll put all the entries into a big box; give it a shake; and pull out the name of the lucky winner. This is CHASA's only major fundraiser, so please help us help these little stroke and hemiplegia survivors. Money raised will help CHASA help families purchase an orthotic (foot brace) to help a little stroke survivor learn to walk and maintain balance. Money will also help us send a parent and child to the national retreat where they can meet others - it's hard to think you're the only kid who wears a brace or takes medicine every day to stop seizures. Money will also fund college and … [Read more...]

Name the New Children’s Hemiplegia and Stroke Association Mascot

CHASA Mascot

We need your help!  CHASA has been searching for a mascot and we were inspired by a very special penguin who lives at the Santa Barbara zoo. His name is Lucky, and he wears a special shoe like the ones worn by so many of our kids with hemiplegia. We were so excited to hear about Lucky and how strong and brave he is that the CHASA board decided to adopt a penguin as our mascot.  But, our penguin mascot needs a name, and we need you to send us your ideas for a name for the CHASA mascot. The CHASA board will choose the penguin's name and the winner (or winners) will receive a special recognition for their help in naming the new CHASA mascot. And, you might win a $50 gift certificate! Where do I send the penguin's name? Fill out this form and include your suggestions for the CHASA penguin's name. Should I give the penguin a girl name or a boy name? You should give the penguin a name that can be used for either a girl or boy penguin, since both girls and boys can have hemiplegia or … [Read more...]
