national
sports festival
The National Sports Festival for the Disabled is the
U.S. national championship for athletes with disabilities related to
cerebral palsy, stroke, and traumatic brain injury.
All Festival participants must compete based on
their functional classification. The classification system, which is
sanctioned by various national disability sports organizations and the
National Paralympic Committee, measures the functional level of an athlete
in relation to their chosen sporting event in a way that will allow for
competition against those with similar degrees of disability. In the case
of athletes with cerebral palsy, stroke, or brain injury, disability
classes range from CP1, the most severely involved, to CP8, who are very
minimally involved. For more information on the National Sports Festival,
go to www.nationalsportsfestival.org.
